Grandparents...

My dad got a call today from my aunt. Apparently my grandma (the crazy one in LA) is very out of it and confused. She either took her whole week's worth of meds or none for several days and set a fire in her kitchen on accident. And then she couldn't find the alarm pad that she sets every day. My aunt and my cousin took her to the ER. My dad and my other aunt are headed out there tomorrow. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

A quick book review: A Discovery of Witches

Picture links to B&N nook page!
I tried to come up with a super quick two work book review, but the only one that would come to me is READ IT. So instead I'm going to use a lot of exclamation points and incomplete sentences. Here goes:

*engage caps lock* *establish Kermit flail* BIG LIBRARY!!!! VAMPIRE SCIENTIST! WITCHES! SCHOLARLY RESEARCH! MAGIC, ROMANCE, MYSTERY, AND TIME TRAVEL!!! Bring a French-English dictionary, it might help. Another recommended reading companion is a giant cup of tea.
I might add something more sensible later, but this is an awesome book, and I am eagerly anticipating the sequel.

A How to: Dye yarn

Since Q is looking at a next crafting step of coloring her own fiber, I want to share my knowledge.

Finished products!

Materials:
- Fiber to dye (I normally do 50-100g batches), must be protein (animal) fiber, or animal fiber blend, or nylon
- Acid dyes, I use Jacquard
- Vinegar, preferably the really cheap white vinegar, you will use a lot of it.
- A bucket
- A dedicated dye pot, I use a cheap crock pot.
- Metal or plastic measuring spoons (These will also be dedicated to dyeing, so don't use your nice ones)
- Plastic spoons for mixing
- Mason jars
- A mask
- Gloves ( I like Nitrile, but vinyl or latex would work as well, but you can't go around doing "Two by Two, hands of blue".)
- An apron, or painting clothes, I use an old lab coat, this gets messy

***NOTE: Anything that you use for dyeing needs to be dedicated to dyeing or at least to crafting, and not EVER used in food preparation once it has been used for dye.***

1. Soak your fiber in warm water with vinegar added. The vinegar will open up the proteins in the fiber, so that is important. For yarn you want your yarn in a skein, not a ball. Make sure your skein is tied off in at least two, preferably three places.

Yarn bucket

2. Prepare your dye. Wear your mask while working with the dye powder, once it's mixed it's not necessary. Start out with about 2 cups of warm water in a mason jar. Add 1-2 teaspoons of dye powder to the jar. This can be in any combination of colors. For my blue-grey yarn I used 1&1/2 teaspoons of silver grey, and ~1/4 teaspoon gunmetal.  Mix with a plastic spoon.

Supplies!

Write down your recipes. Or you will forget them. This is important if you want to make the same color more than once. You can test your color by wiping the back of your spoon on a paper towel, a coffee filter, or I use my lab coat. Once you have a color that you like, add a glug of vinegar, no need to measure.

3. Combine dye and fiber. There are two methods that I like.

A) Kettle dye.

This will produce generally one all over color for your fiber. There will be some natural variations in how the dye is absorbed, and that is good, but it will be all one color or close to it.

I do my dyeing in my really cheap crock pot, but you can also do it on the stove in dye only cookware. Add enough water to the pot to submerge the fiber in. Then add the fiber, and a glug of vinegar. Then pour some your your already prepared dye over the fiber. Mix with a spoon or other stirring utensil. If the color does not appear saturated enough, add more dye.

This yarn is in progress

B) Saran-wrap method.

This method is good for combining multiple colors on one skein of yarn/piece of fiber. Lay out a piece of Saran-wrap that is a little longer than your fiber. Place a second piece of Saran-wrap so that it overlaps the first piece by about an inch, so that you basically have a double wide piece of Saran-wrap.
Lay your fiber on the Saran-wrap longways and apply your dye. You can use squeeze bottles (hair dye bottles work well), spray bottles, eye droppers, or just pour the dye onto the fiber. You don't want too much extra liquid on the piece.

Colored with leftovers from another project
Gently massage the color into the fiber. After you are done with one side, flip the fiber over and apply dye to the other side if needed. Once you are satisfied with the colors, fold over the short ends of the Saran-wrap and then roll the fiber into a fiber-burrito (roll down the long way of the fiber). This doesn't need to be super tight, just not sloppy. Place the fiber-burrito into a (dry) crockpot.

This burrito is not for eating

For both methods - Cover and "cook" for about 30-45 minutes. The kettle method will simmer, and the Saran-wrap will steam. The heat is important for getting the color to set, but the acid in the vinegar actually does most of the work. You can also leave dyed fiber in a black plastic bag in the sun or a car trunk, but that takes longer.

4. Rinse and dry. Once the fiber is done cooking, rinse it with warm water, gradually decreasing the temperature. You don't want to rinse hot fiber with cold water, or it will felt (I have yet to try this out as a method of actually felting something, but it might be a way to felt with a high degree of control). Once the fiber is rinsed, then comes the really fun part. Take it outside and spin it to remove excess water. Optional: sing "I whip my yarn back and forth."  Hang it up to allow it to dry. Unused exercise equipment comes in handy for this. Put your bucket under the drying fiber to collect any drips. Once it is dry, use it as you normally would.

Have fun, and don't be afraid of color!
This didn't fit anywhere else, it's my first dye project from a class.
Which turned into a gorgeous pair of fingerless gloves.

~DoHP

P.S. If the color doesn't turn out the way you want it to, resoak it and dye it again! Works best if the second dye is darker than the first.

Huh, that's strange

So, my desktop. A rather nice computer, built it myself, only about a year and a half old. It experienced unprovoked catastrophic harddrive failure.

My dad and I could not come up with any thing to do for it other than reinstall windows. But that was going far slower than windows installs should, so I'm off to look for upgrades. Maybe even Windows 7.  Totally not what I was planning on doing this weekend.

And yes, we tried the, use a different cable, use a different port, use a different mother board, thing and nothing recognises this drive. And of course it's my boot drive.

Grr. Argh.

I can't dress myself. And I get made fun of because I can't follow the rules that nobody told me in the first place.

So, jeans it is. Can't wear skirts anymore because I don't have appropriate shoes.

Taking the topic

If I were to guess, I'd say that the suggested topic is one that we should all post on right? Right.

Today at work I am supposed to be scanning my outs. I walk around the shelves with a scanny gun and scan the labels of everything that's out of stock. This is incredibly boring. I get part way through, and lo and behold, the wall of birth control is a mess! Packs didn't get taken out of boxes, boxes are stacked outside of their baskets, there are several empty baskets of things we don't stock anymore... So I organize it. It's pretty now. That was my freak organizational moment for the month. I also found a full afternoon's worth of tasks to keep me from sending back my expired drugs.

I've also gotten a whole lot done, mostly reading and knitting, while avoiding doing laundry. The "there's something in the dryer" excuse never gets old. For the record I do my laundry. I could probably do it more frequently, but it gets done. Normally at about 2am. The folding is the part I really hate.

Week of the Sisterhood

It's finals again and I'm tired as all get out. Emotional, too.

This week I got to see all of you, which was a rare treat. If Fuzzy had been able to make the wedding, we all would have been together for the first time in who knows how long--even so, I'm still glad I got to see all of you.

DoHP, you need to move back, sweety. We all miss you more than you realize. You can stay in our front room cheap, and we'll find you a job. You can have your own bathroom if you're willing to deal with our OCD cleaning nueroses. I can't even tell you how much you were missed after you left--they way we all kept staring at the empty spot on the couch. This time around, the couches were full, and it was good. Plant those black eyed peas I sent you home with, because we need to break your black thumb curse. And thanks for not killing my orange trees.

Munchkin, congratulations on getting married. I can tell you it's the most frustrating and rewarding thing you'll ever do in life. Just remember--that first year is a doozy. Everyone thinks they will be different, but the first year is hard. It's like dating all over because suddenly you think he's going to change, and he will, but probably not the way you want him to. Just weather that first year, and as a subtle recommendation, don't add pregnancy hormones to the mix. One year either way won't make a difference at this point, and when you're screaming about dishes or trash removal or money, he won't be able to throw it in your face that your just hormonal.

Fuzzy, when did that boy get so big? Seems like just yesterday I was sleeping on a wooden hospital bench at 3am while you were sitting there in the worst pain of your life, trying to bring new life into the world. Remember when we were like 12 and we rode our bikes around the block? Remember when we read Animorphs? Remember when we used to get dropped off and picked up together in middle school? Kiddo, you need to move back too. I don't see enough of you anymore, and I really want to know your kid.

And Q, these last few weeks were really special. I'm sorry if I creeped you out with all the smiling--I just kept looking up and seeing you and Mr. Q, all cuddly and together again, and the two of you just look so happy. You're a different person when he's around; it really is like the two of you own a piece of each other, because I can tell when he's been away too long. You fake smile a lot and you're a little hallow when you talk. This past week you really smiled. You really laughed. And you looked really, really happy. I'm happy to have my old Q back, because when you shine, the rest of the world does too.

I'll see all y'all tonight!

I'm so excited! Except my laptop is borked. But I'm excited anyways! *dances*

Are you sure it's not a full moon?

Today was weird conversation day. Every single conversation I had today was bizzare. I know three of you have worked with dog poop on a regular basis and see it as a normal work topic, but when you tell your pharmacy tech about your dog pooping where he's not suspossed to, that is a weird conversation. Also, when your doctor says no, you are not allowed to argue. I don't care how loud you get.

I got bit by the project bug something awful. Every spring and every fall, I just urges to make something. I've started writing random stories. I now know why they are called plot bunnies. They mutiply in the fibbinoci sequence. I spent a Saturday afternoon charting out a cable pattern for a class. The knitting and cooking bugs seem to bite in the fall though.

I also have no idea where the geeky guys are around here. They guys associated with my co-workers (other than the pharmacists) are either construction workers or truck drivers.

Also, everything between my ribcage and my legs is protesting my existance. Ow.

I know I know...

I have been quite absent in my blogging lately. This may be because I pick up hobbies like some people pick up shiny sea shells. The other day I tried to learn to spin. At the end of the evening I concluded that I was going to leave the yarn making to the professionals.

So here's the quick and dirty overview of what has been going on in my life. (This would be done by hand puppets, but it would be too much work to draw and scan everything. :P)

- The next two weeks are going to be the only ones in which I enjoy living in the south all year. Because I has a spring! But everything has not been coated in a fine yellow dust. Do y'all know what is actually in pollen? Tree sperm.

- I am still not done with my purple sweater from July. Alright I knit another sweater, 2 pairs of fingerless gloves, a hat, and a scarf, and put together two patterns since then as well. But still. Makes me feel layzee.

- Cooking disaster #347: Black eyed peas and installing WoW. They don't go together.

- I have worked with the general public for well over 2 years, and I am still amazed on a daily basis, at how stupid people can be. Drop off a prescription at drop off window, pick it up at pick up window, how hard can that be? Also, having to re-train your co-workers every other week on how not to special order things we are getting shipped to us from corporate, that would be a nice Easter present. Also, I want less paperwork for Christmas.

- I finally found a used bookstore. It's organization system is piles. I think I'm in love. <3

- I don't remember if I ever told you what I got on my PCAT. I got a 92. I know you don't know what that means. But it's a percentile score.

- I am really really really looking foward to seeing all y'all in April!

- I need to start remembering work stories to share.

Do I get brownie points if I use all the labels in one post? How about just brownies? Next post (of mine) will be my uber-awesome brownie recipe. Maybe with mint modifications.

Until next time,
DoHP

Test run

This is a test run of my mail to blogger, I really have nothing else to say.  Except maybe that I welcome our new google overlords and wish to bake them cookies. Hmm, maybe I need to check my bread

The most geeky thing I have ever done.

(Sorry if the image is large, I'm in computer transition)

I'm debating between letting the image speak for itself and explaining some more.

My big Christmas gift was a whole pile of boxes. That all contained computer parts. So over the last couple of days, I have been building my new computer. It's so shiny it glows. (The case fans, well 3 of the 4, have blue LED lights in them.) And you can see it's innards. It was a whole bunch of fun, and a learning experience. I am no longer afraid of messing about on the inside of my computer, because I know exactly what's in there. And this is great timing too, because my laptop needs to go in for repairs. Silly thing loosing power when it's unplugged for more than 2 minutes.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Enjoy your family, enjoy your turkey, and really enjoy the football.

Also, let me know if you need to be rescued from anything with a phone call from your long distance friend.

Personally, I'm thankfull for my family, my friends, and car insurance.

Too much talent, not enough direction

I am apparently good and have talent at a lot of things. I can knit, and am entering a design contest that would pay real money if I won. I'm just waiting on the yarn to get actually working on this. I'm thinking of writing a book (about knitting, on knitting theory 101, for people who don't learn as organically as most knitting books teach. And maybe even a sequel on color theory for people who didn't go to art school).

I can cook. I have plans for spending excessive time in the kitchen over the next month perfecting Christmas brownies. I want to enter the "next food network star" contest, but I realize that the show I would make would talk about the science/history behind everyday foods, and contain lots of puns. That show has already been made.

The only thing I can't decide on, is a career.

Quick questions

If I tell y'all why I'm asking it'll jinx it.

Munchkin- What are your wedding colors? Or another set of favorite colors?

Q- You still like green right?

Alula- You like fall/warm colors I think? Tell me if I'm wrong please.

Ladies, I could use some help here

Okay, I did something stupid. My project list has gotten a little out of hand. In terms of crafty projects only I have:

~ A sweater
~ A pair of Socks
~ 2 battle axes (I will present pictures when they are done)
~ *New* Cork Board Project

See, my mom and I were at the big kitchy-crap place (It's like Hobby Lobby merged with a home decor store) and I found some 6"x6" cork board squares. I grabed a couple packages and so did my mom. We were going to work together on making myself and my sister each a half-cork-board/half-fabric-covered-sytrofoam board system. After we got fabric at Hancock's, we had some creative differences.

So, we decided to have a contest, judged mostly on how put together and finished the board is, and less on creativity.

Materials so far:
-12 6"x6" cork board squares
- 1/2 yard of three different fabrics (pictured above)
-ribbon
-lime green rick-rack
-hot glue sticks, but no hot glue gun

My plan is to make a square board that is 5 squares by 5 squares (total of 25 squares). 13 will be fabric covered, 12 cork board. I'm going to Hobby Lobby tomorrow to look for styrofoam to make the fabric covered squares, and maybe some more decorating accessories. And elastic. Because I want to make the fabric covered ones (I guess they're...) French style message boards. That's the type that has the ribbon go in an x across the square and is held taught and you can slip things under the ribbons. And I will mount them on something and frame it with some molding and then paint the same sort of spirals on the molding.

What do I mount this sort of stuff to?
How do I mount it?
What do I use to attach fabric to styrofoam/other sorts of foam?
Where's my hot glue gun?

Ice cream had to die

Everyone has those days. Stuff just goes wrong. Nothing goes right. Bad stuff happens. And at the end of the day, ice cream needs to die.

So what does the sisterhood go for when ice cream needs to meet a gruesome end?

For me, there's a Coldstone between work and home. The Love It size fits in my cup holder perfectly. Today's selection was chocolate with carmel/chocolate bits mixed in, but it's normally white chocolate with Heath bar bits. And if Coldstone is cost prohibitive, I totally go for the frosty and extra-salty fries.

(Events that inspired the ice cream massacre are being stored away for another make your own adventure post)

Stuff on the cat

He looks so angry dosen't he? So Angry you just want to cuddle him and make it all better.

(I was browsing through some old photos, and found this, it was suspossed to be a submission to "Stuff on my Cat", but we decided that it didn't have nearly enough stuff)
